Increasing Participation in Sport and Physical Activity

Sports Unlimited – each School Sport Partnership (SSP) has been allocated £27K to develop sporting opportunities for semi-sporty children and young people aged 5-19 years.  RBWM has been successful with £54K for over 30 sports projects across school and community sites to run April 2010-March 2011.  This funding is part of the New Lifestyles legacy of the South East Partnership’s Triple Gold Strategy.  RBWM’s aim is to retain 746 children and young people in sporting activities by March 2011.  Examples of projects are below:

    • 2012 Inspired – young people will receive coaching in 10 Olympic/Paralympic sports over 10 weeks.  Linked with one of RBWM’s Pre-Games Training Camps, Longridge Watersports Centre will provide rowing and kayaking as 2 of the sports.  1 course per term will run in 3 different areas – Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead.  Over 70 places available for young people.
    • Magnet Gymnastics
    • Cheerleading at Windsor Leisure Centre
    • Cox Green and Longridge Climbing – Cox Green Leisure Centre and Longridge Watersports Centre to work in partnership to offer 10 week climbing courses for young people, 5 weeks at each venue.
    • Cycling in Old Windsor – the Go-Ride Scheme is set to run for 10 week courses for young people in the Old Windsor area.

Active Families Project – to provide new and improved opportunities for families to participate in sport  and active recreation through establishing an ‘Active Families’ brand, and producing an Active Families 2012 Pack and running Active Family Weekends.

Get Active in the Royal Borough – to ensure those inspired by the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics are aware of where to access information to participate and also encouraged to take part in sport and active recreation on a regular basis.

Volunteering in Sport – a Volunteer Pathway has been put together and promoted to sports clubs, leisure and community groups to outline where to advertise volunteer opportunities as well as where to signpost volunteers who are looking for positions.

    2012 Inspired Events

Berkshire Indoor County Rowing Championships – On Tuesday 30 March 2010, over 200 young people took part in the 2012 themed rowing championships at Dorney Lake, sponsored by Ascot Racecourse and the 6 local authorities in Berkshire.  The event is to run annually at Dorney Lake with Longridge Watersports Centre as the future sponsor.

RBWM Primary Link Teacher (PLT) Conference: Olympic Legacy Conference – the theme for the conference was ‘A Lasting Legacy for School Sport’.  This included action planning using the Get Set Programme, with the Olympic and Paralympic used as a central focus.

Berkshire PE Conference – secondary school PE teachers across Berkshire are invited to attend the conference on Tuesday 6 July, 12.30-5.50pm at Bradfield College.  As part of the conference a Get Set workshop is being delivered by the Director of Sport at Park House School in West Berkshire.  This workshop will give an overview of Get Set and examples of projects that can be run across primary and secondary schools to embed the Values of the Olympic/Paralympic Games, improve networking with other schools and support with increasing participation in sport and physical activity.

Gifted and Talented Athletics Day – a Playground to Podium event for young talented athletes with disabilities and is part of the New Lifestyles legacy of the South East Partnership’s Triple Gold Strategy.  As well as taking part in the competition, some athletes will have the opportunity to be assessed and further developed and directed to appropriate high quality coaching opportunities.

Berkshire Olympics/Paralympic Sports Day – a proposed large participation event for young people across Berkshire using the SSP network to enter SSP teams to compete in a variety of competitive sports events.

RBWM’s Get Set Conference – Following the success of the Newlands School Olympic Committee’s conference for their own school, the event has been opened wider to all secondary and middle schools across RBWM.  Newlands Olympic Committee is made up of 6 year 9 students and they are going to organise and run the Olympic conference.

Berkshire Young Ambassadors Conference – each secondary school across England has 2 Young Ambassadors (YA).  There are 450 School Sport Partnerships (SSP) across England and each SSP can send 4 YAs to an annual regional YA Conference.  The regional conference teaches YAs about their role and inspires them to lead assemblies, sports competitions and events back in their school and SSP.  The conference will run on 4 or 5 October 2010 at Dorney Lake.

2012 Torch Relay – local authorities to bid to host the official Torch Relay of the Olympic Games (60-80 days before the Olympic Games) and the Paralympic Games (7 days before the Paralympic Games).  If successful, potentially run a schools lunchtime event  or link to a local evening event as well as hopefully put forward some local torch bearers.

    Supporting Talented Athletes and Coaches

Player Bursary – RBWM and Buckinghamshire both have a bursary scheme for talented athletes.  The Louis Baylis (Maidenhead Advertiser) Charitable Trust are match funding RBWM’s bursary grant for the 4 years leading up to and including 2012 enabling more athletes to receive financial support to develop in their chosen sport.

Coach Bursary - coach bursaries can be applied for annually by sports coaches from Level 1 in their sport to Level 4.  RBWM and Berkshire Sport run a Coach Bursary Scheme to support coaches with further qualifications to develop their coaching skills.

Living the Values of the Games

Get Set Programme – 34 out of 59 schools in RBWM have signed up to the Get Set website.  1 school, Newlands Girls’ School has signed up to the Get Set Network (1 of 4 schools across Berkshire by March 2010).  Newlands has about 300 pupils signed up to the network and their Olympic committee have been completing an Olympic Blog on the website.  Newlands have promoted the Network to other schools and so far Altwood and Cox Green are committed to signing up.

Flame Relay – each secondary and middle school to become the custodian of 2012 for 6 weeks (a half term).  Each school can use their specialism and the Get Set Network to create an innovative programme for themselves and their family of schools.  The aim is for the ‘Flame’ to be passed from school to school up to the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in July 2012.  The Heads of Physical Education (PE) are keen for this relay to run.

Whole School Olympic Days – a lot of schools hold days where the timetables are collapsed for a day for a whole school themed day.  Heads of PE are committed to promoting the idea of whole school Olympic days to their headteachers for the academic year 2011/12, and also in 2010/11 if there is still time to build it into the planning for next year.

Olympic/Paralympic Resources – cross-curricular resource packs have been funded by School Sport Partnerships for every school in RBWM.  The packs give ideas for Olympic/Paralympic themed activities for each of the curriculum areas.

Value Awards and Values Passport – the Value Awards will be based on the 7 Olympic and Paralympic Values (Friendship, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Inspiration, Courage and Equality).  Local awards are to be created or current awards amended to incorporate the values, e.g. Excellence – Sportsman of the Year; Inspiration – Volunteer/Coach of the Year.  The awards can be school and community based.  The Values Passport is a school and young person (year 5/6/7) based passport scheme where young people work towards  7 values and log their achievements.

Values and Competition – county competitions will be given Olympic/Paralympic values.  Each competition at local School Sport Partnership (SSP) round and county finals will promote each value.  Each competition also promotes and rewards for example, Respect (fair play), Determination (player of the day), Inspiration (leader of the day) and Excellence (competition winners).

    Facility Legacy

Pre-Games Training Camps –  RBWM has 5 venues, these are Berkshire College of Agriculture (BCA), Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre, Longridge Watersports Centre, Thames Valley Athletics Centre (TVAC) and Windsor, Ascot, Maidenhead District Sports Association for the Disabled (WAMDSAD).  See the Training Camps section for more information on each venue.
