The Long Walk, Windsor Great Park

The Long Walk, Windsor Great Park

Top Tips for August

Welcome to August in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Here are our top tips for this month.

Windsor Castle Round Tower and Moat Garden

See Windsor Castle from two different angles

Climb the 200 steps to the top of Windsor Castle's iconic Round Tower and enjoy breathtaking views across the historic Windsor parkland, the Thames Valley, London skyline as well as the extent of Windsor Castle.

You’ll be 65.5 metres above the River Thames and you’ll get a close view of the castle’s 15-metre flagpole which flies the Royal Standard when The Queen is in residence and the Union Flag when Her Majesty is away from Windsor.

Please note, there is an extra charge for this tour and you must be aware of the safety information and height restrictions before booking your ticket.

The Castle’s Moat Garden is also open each Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday during August (please note, there is an extra charge with all proceeds going to charity).

The ornate garden sits at the foot of the tower and is the private area belonging to the Castle Governor, whose residence is in the Norman Tower.

There are two sections of the garden – the upper, and lower. The upper covers the slope of the Round Tower, with a stunning little terrace and pathway.

The lower contains a beautifully maintained lawn and rock garden and has a very quaint English feel about it.

Usually only visible looking down into the moat from the Middle Ward, this little slice of garden perfection is not to be missed!

Royal Windsor Racecourse

Go Racing

August is THE month to enjoy some amazing racing at Royal Windsor Racecourse

But it’s not all about the horses; there’s great entertainment on offer too including Mercury – a Queen tribute act – and real live Boyzone!

There’s a Sausage Festival and an Ice Cream Festival so you and the family will be well catered for.

And it’s a beautiful location by the river – you can even take the French Brothers Windsor Races Shuttle and arrive from Windsor by boat.

Luna Cinema at Ascot Racecourse

Enjoy some outdoor cinema

What could be nicer than a balmy summer’s afternoon or evening with friends and family, some good food and drink and a classic film enjoyed in the open air?

Luna Cinema at Ascot Racecourse (3-5 August) will be showing movie classics under the stars: Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Notting Hill.

Maidenhead at the Movies returns to Kidwells Park on the 18, 19 and 20 August for 3 days of free movie fun in the park.  Films confirmed so far include Power Rangers, Beauty and the Beast (2017), Sing, Dirty Dancing, Star Wars Rogue One and La La Land.  Follow Enjoy Maidenhead on Facebook and Twitter for the latest news.

Cliveden Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea with a twist

The traditions of afternoon tea date from the 1840s when it was reputed the seventh Duchess of Bedford introduced it to appease that ‘sinking feeling’ she experienced between an early lunch and a late supper.

Small, crust-less sandwiches, cake and biscuits were easy to eat without dirtying ones gloves!

Explore some lovely afternoon tea options while you are in the Windsor area, including a floating afternoon tea on the River!

George Inn Bar

Enjoy a summer pint

After a long day’s sightseeing, how about relaxing with a nice pint of locally-brewed beer in one of our local pubs?

The Two Brewers on Park Street is one of Windsor’s favourites, located right next to the entrance to the Long Walk.  It’s small but perfectly formed with only nine tables inside and wooden benches outside.

The Boatman is Windsor’s only proper pub by the river and has been an historical eating and drinking establishment since 1829.

Venture a little out of Windsor town centre and you’ll come across some great locals such as the Prince Arthur, a down-to-earth pub dating from 1898, and the Alma, a traditional British pub with the largest beer garden in Windsor.

The Windsor and Eton Brewery is a gem of a place.  Not only does it supply many of the local pubs with its delicious range of beers – such as the George Inn, Eton – it’s also open for brewery tours, Beer Yoga and Stand Up comedy nights!

Windsor Bandstand

Live at the Bandstand

With summer upon us, get out in the fresh air and listen to some bandstand music as you relax with family and friends.

Bring a picnic and head down to Alexandra Gardens located near the River Thames in the shadow of Windsor Castle, where Windsor’s bandstand – opened by The Queen in 2016 – will play host to a selection of performers on weekends during August.

Windsor Castle has its own bandstand in its Jubilee Gardens and throughout August visitors to the Castle can watch performances on selected weekend afternoons.

The Queen's Walkway

Discover Sightseeing Walkways and Museums

The Eton Walkway starts at the pedestrian bridge that joins Windsor and Eton and connects 18 points of interest in this historic town.
