Top Tips for July

Welcome to July in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Here are our top tips for this month.

Live at the Bandstand

With summer upon us, get out in the fresh air and listen to some bandstand music as you relax with family and friends.

Bring a picnic and head down to Alexandra Gardens located near the River Thames in the shadow of Windsor Castle, where Windsor’s bandstand – opened by The Queen in 2016 – will play host to performers on selected weekends from 22 July 2017 - Live at the Bandstand.

Windsor Castle has its own bandstand in its Jubilee Gardens and throughout  July and August visitors to the Castle can watch performances on selected weekend afternoons.

Ferrari 70th Anniversary Tour comes to Windsor, 15 July

Ferrari is 70 years old this year and an exciting display of Ferrari cars – including the Limited Series LaFerrari Aperta – is coming to Windsor on Saturday 15 July 2017 in celebration.

The display will showcase the incredible heritage, design and racing history of 70 years of the world’s most powerful and recognisable automotive brand.

The cars will be displayed on the Long Walk between 12:00 and 14:00.

Swan Upping, 17-21 July

Did you know The Queen has a Swan Warden and that once a year the mute swans on the River Thames have an annual health check?

If you want to witness something traditional and unique, you’d be hard pressed to beat the sight of the annual Swan Upping ceremony on the River Thames which takes place over 5 days in July.

The Royal Swan Uppers wear the scarlet uniform of Her Majesty The Queen  and it is their responsibility – together with the Swan Uppers from the Vintners’ and Dyers’ livery companies – to travel upstream between Sunbury and Abingdon helping The Queen’s Swan Warden to assess the health of young cygnets and examine them for any injuries.

Check the Swan Upping timetable to see dates and times when they are in town and drop by the river to take a look!

Big Camp at Cliveden, 7/8, 14/15, 21/22 July

Cliveden's Big Camp takes place overnight in the National Trust Cliveden’s historic woodlands and gives families an opportunity to sit back, relax and enjoy watching the kids stretch their legs.

Explore nature as you take part in activities like Sweep Netting, and join the ranger-led Bat Chat.

End the evening with hot chocolate, marshmallows and storytelling round the campfire before you settle down in your tent, then enjoy a complimentary breakfast and hot drinks in the morning.

Remember to bring a tent and other camping essentials with you for this special family fun activity.  Pre-booking is essential.

Wimbledon Weekend Finals, 15/16 July

Play is well underway so make a date to watch the Wimbledon Weekend Finals in Maidenhead, 15 and 16 July.

There’ll be outdoor seating, big screens and strawberries and cream! Plus tennis taster sessions, activities and prizes.

Windsor & Eton En Plein Air, 22 July

Windsor & Eton En Plein Air is an open air painting event and competition open to both amateur and professional artists and artists’ groups.

Royal consent has again been granted to allow the competition to be staged within the walls of Windsor Castle.

Artists are invited to create their own masterpiece over a six-and-a-half-hour period in one of ten positions within the castle grounds, including the beautiful, secluded private Moat Garden.

As a visitor to Windsor Castle you are welcome to join in this unique cultural experience and witness 100 artists capturing its familiar and less well known aspects.

Get caught up in the excitement of watching paintings come to life before your eyes. Then vote for your favourite painting, as part of the People’s Choice Award, at the pop-up street gallery and sale of artwork to be held on Castle Hill from 5pm.

Come and be part of this great spectacle – art created en plein air.

Gorgeous Gardens

It’s the height of summer and for many gardens this is their time to shine – with borders full of summer planting, colour and fragrance.

Come and visit the beautiful gardens in the Windsor area.

From The Savill Garden, nestled in the corner of Windsor Great Park, to Waltham Place, considered Berkshire’s best-kept secret.

How about exploring some private gardens and hidden gems open as part of the National Garden Scheme?

On Sunday 16 July, Cookham’s Odney Club – a 120-acre site beside the Thames with lovely riverside walks – is open to the public, 2-6pm.  It was a favourite with Stanley Spencer who featured Odney’s magnolia in his work.

See also lovely wisteria, specimen trees, herbaceous borders, side gardens, summer bedding and an ornamental lake.

Maidenhead Festival, 22/23 July 2017

The two-day Maidenhead Festival will take place over the weekend of 22 and 23 July.  The family-focused event will feature music, a beach, fairground, stalls and side shows and if you're lucky you might spot a friendly clown or acrobat!

The festival will be centred around Kidwells Park but aims to involve the whole of the town and local community.  All are encouraged to dress up and join in!
