Windsor Castle to be lit up for Christmas

12th November 2014

Categories: News

Regal designs will be projected onto Windsor Castle as part of this year’s Christmas light display.

Projections will illuminate one of the towers on Windsor Castle Wall from Saturday 15 November, when the town’s lights are officially switched on, until January 6, when they are turned off.

Among the images that will appear on the tower is detail from one of the castle’s doors in red and the colourful stain glass windows from St George Chapel.

The Royal Borough has a bright history of creative lighting schemes in the town centre including a town-wide illumination display to mark the start of the Cultural Olympiad in 2008.

For this project the Royal Borough is working with Ross Ashton from Projection Studio who worked on an internationally acclaimed scheme for LOCOG during the Olympics in 2012, which saw three of the castle’s towers on Thames Street illuminated. The display attracted more than 85,000 visitors.

Cllr George Bathurst, chairman of Windsor and Eton Town Partnership and Royal Borough cabinet member, said: “We have a growing tradition of presenting projects such as this in conjunction with Windsor Castle and these are of great benefit to the town centre and the community we serve.

“This is the first time that the external wall of the castle is being used  as part of the Christmas illuminations for the town, and we would like to extend our thanks to the Royal Collection and HM The Queen for their support in allowing us to do this.

“We believe this will be an exciting Christmas scheme for the castle, that the town and residents will be proud of and one which will increase visitors.

“This is a great addition to the Christmas lights display in Windsor and one that will enhance the festive feeling in the town for residents.”

It is hoped the illuminated tower will become a regular feature of the Christmas lights programme.

Money for the project has come from £100,000 allocated by the Royal Borough to extend the lighting scheme in Windsor over the next two years and with significant financial support from partners and businesses including Windsor District Chamber of Commerce and the Windsor and Eton Rotary Club.

This has come as a result of the close working relationship between the council and businesses in the town centre which has been developed over the last few years and was supported by the Royal Borough’s cabinet last month.

The Christmas Lights Switch On event will take place at Castle Hill, Windsor, on Saturday 15 November from 3.30pm.

The event, being held in association with Windsor District Chamber of Commerce, will include a children’s lantern procession through the streets followed by a programme of live entertainment.

* In Maidenhead the annual switch on event outside the Town Hall will begin at 4.30pm on Saturday 22 November with live music and entertainment.

Just before 6pm the countdown will begin for the lights switch on which will be followed by a spectacular firework display from the roof of the Town Hall.

During the day the High Street, Queen Street and St Ives Road will be closed to traffic and turned into a Christmas funfair and market with craft and food stalls and children’s entertainment.

Santa and his helpers will be in the Nicholsons Shopping Centre from 11am to 3pm in the main square and Dali the Clown will also be in the centre working his balloon magic.

A free Christmas craft workshop will be run by Craft Coop where visitors can make a Christmas decoration to take home.

Many shops in the town will stay open until 8pm for late night shoppers.
