Although often thought of as a castle town the appearance of modern day Windsor owes more to the coming of the railways in 1849 than to any other development. This most visible aspect of  the town's past, however, is only the most recent of a series of overlays made since Saxon times, including the town's first setting-out on its current site, as a planned castle town, in c. 1135.

Windsor is bursting with history, and Dr Lewis of Historic Eton and Windsor Tours emphasises not just its connection to the medieval castle, but its efforts to survive when, for many years, the castle fell from royal favour and the town was forced to 'live of its own'.

Dr David Lewis, who lives in Windsor, offers an informed, lively and friendly guide to the fascinating layers of history to be found within the royal town, several dating from well before the castle came into existence.

Dr Lewis is the foremost authority on the long history of Windsor and Eton, his information being taken from original sources and his own historical research. He is the author of the Historic Towns Atlas of Windsor and Eton, and has published numerous articles on the medieval and early modern history of both communities.  He completed his doctorate on the history of medieval Windsor and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

Historic Eton and Windsor Tours start from the Visitor Information Centre, Windsor Royal Shopping, Thames Street, SL4 1PJ at 11am on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays at 11am.

Tours consist of small groups of about 15 pax., with a duration of about 1 hour 15 mins. These tours involving a short walk, on mostly flat pavement, between the central station and the Long Walk.  The route of the tour is suitable for wheelchairs and there are public conveniences on-route.

The tours are for individuals on a non booked basis, or can be pre-booked for groups consisting of 15 pax or more. A bespoke tour can also be arranged on a pre-booked basis, when there is no minimum group size or stipulated duration, with a fee calculated at an hourly rate. These tours can be structured to include features or places of particular interest, covering both Windsor and Eton.

The tours are suitable for those with little or no knowledge of English history, the aim being to tell the story of Windsor and its inhabitants over the nine centuries of its existence. Enquiries about the tours from schools, universities, local history societies, clubs, associations and corporates are welcome.
