The Resurrection with the Raising of Jairus’s Daughter (Estate Stanley Spencer)

About

Stanley Spencer and Modern British Art in partnership with Southampton City Art Gallery.

Some of the most important names from the Modern British art scene will be hanging on the walls of the Stanley Spencer Gallery this summer. Seven loans from Southampton City Art Gallery will be hung alongside works by Spencer, broadening our understanding of the art and history of early twentieth-century Britain.

On show will be works by Mark Gertler, C.R.W. Nevinson, Gilbert Spencer and William Nicholson, amongst others. Gertler and Nevinson studied with Spencer at the Slade, and like him, went on to become some of the most accomplished artists of their generation. In different ways, all of them were affected by the Great War, but it was Nevinson in particular who achieved a new power of artistic expression, illustrated in this exhibition by Loading Timber Southampton.
