Family Festival: Queen Victoria’s Circus

Type:Participatory Event

Windsor Castle, Windsor, Berkshire, SL4 1NJ
Family festival: Queen Victoria’s circus

About

Celebrate the 200th anniversary of Queen Victoria’s birth at Windsor Castle’s fun-filled Victorian family festival.  Attractions will include falconry and horse-riding displays, storytelling, musical performances, dressing up in Victorian costumes, as well as a Victorian circus troupe, inspired by the travelling circus that visited Windsor Castle in 1847.

Victorian circus

Lost in Translation Circus will appear at this year’s family festival.  Visitors can delight in circus parades, featuring a family of life-size puppet elephants, astounding aerial acrobatics, stilt walkers, acrobats, jugglers, a human lion tamer act and much more! Why not have a go yourself by joining the circus school.

Storytelling

Visit the Quadrangle where storyteller Olivia Armstrong will bring to life the incredible tale of George Wombwell’s travelling menagerie, which brought entertainment to the royal family over 170 years ago in the same location.  Head to the Moat Garden and hear the joyously silly play The Merry Wives of Windsor, told by a storyteller from Shakespeare’s Globe.

Falconry and horse-riding displays

Learn about the art of Victorian falconry with Raphael Historic Falconry who will teach visitors about the art of Victorian falconry with their beautiful live birds of prey.

Musical performances

The Salvation Army will perform in Victorian uniforms and you can enjoy performances by period music duo, Hautbois too.  Little ones will appreciate Bach to Baby classical concerts in the tranquil Moat Garden.

Costume-handling

Try on some spectacular Victorian costumes, inspired by images and portraits of Queen Victoria and her family in the Royal Collection.

Arts and crafts

Windsor’s Busy Buttons Creative Studio will be running a circus-themed art workshop bursting with creativity.
