About

Secrets of a well-loved comedian told on stage

Frankie Howerd was one of Britain’s most loved comedians for over half a century. But he had a secret. And the secret’s name was Dennis. Howerd’s End is at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts on Thursday 14 December at 7.30pm. Tickets are £16.

This hugely acclaimed play by Mark Farrelly takes you to the heart of Frankie and Dennis’ clandestine relationship. It was a relationship which lasted from the 1950s until Frankie’s death in 1992. The play also affords a glorious opportunity to encounter Frankie in full-flight stand up mode.

Written by Mark Farrelly who also plays the role of Dennis Heymer. Mark is the author of two hit solo plays The Silence of Snow: The Life of Patrick Hamilton and Quentin Crisp: Naked Hope. He also wrote Jarman, a solo portrait of the artist, film-maker, gardener and activist Derek Jarman. Mark is an actor and writer and graduated from Cambridge with a double first-class degree.

Frankie Howerd is played by Simon Cartwright, an actor and magician. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and pursued a performing career as both actor and impressionist. He played a number of gigs at The Comedy Store with Alistair McGowen and played the role of Bob Monkhouse in 2016 in The Last Laugh.

Directed by Joe Harmston, a storyteller of over thirty years. His career began in 1993 when he directed the critically acclaimed King James’ Ear at The Old Red Lion. He has since directed over 100 productions around the world, and forged associations with significant voices, such as Harold Pinter and Ronald Harwood.

Packed with laughter, but unafraid of truth, Howerd’s End portrays two humans’ journey through closeness, love, grief, and all the other things that make life worth living. Come and say farewell to a legend…and learn the art of letting go.
