Lanterns Live

A debut gig brings pumping brass driven funk to Maidenhead

The Carnival of the Animals Lantern Parade returns to illuminate Maidenhead on Saturday 7 December. For the first time ever, the parade will culminate in a live music gig: Lanterns Live. Held in the Desborough Theatre at the Town Hall, the gig starts at 6.30pm. Tickets are £3 and bookable in advance or on the door.

Fresh from leading the parade, The Brass Funkeys will be headlining this debut show. The eight-piece band draws from the traditions of New Orleans with skilled musicianship. Reggae, Drum ‘n’ Bass, gypsy, swing and Latin influences are exposed revealing a band bursting at the seams with ideas and infectious energy. They have played at major festivals including Glastonbury, Wilderness and the North Sea Jazz Festival, as well as London venues including The O2 Brooklyn Bowl, Koko Camden, and Ronnie Scott’s.

They have recently launched their second album, Rabble Rouser, with a sold-out show at Rich Mix and a 14-date UK tour from Cornwall to Newcastle. The album features 13 tracks of original compositions by band members and unusual covers such as Gorillaz’ Dirty Harry and Royce Wood Junior’s Honeydripper. It marks the Brass Funkeys out as a trailblazer in the new generation of UK Brass Bands.

Supporting them will be four fantastic local music acts: The Haystacks Band, Tara Deane, Lewis and Bros, and a special acoustic set from Lisa Kenny.

The Haystacks Band is a popular Country-Pop band from Maidenhead. They cover popular, well-known songs that you can sing and dance to, and give them a fresh, upbeat country-pop feel. The band also covers new and old Country songs.

Tara Deane is a singer songwriter from Maidenhead. She regularly gets compared to the likes of Lucy Spraggan and Imelda May. Her debut single, Staying Young, won three awards with an online radio station. Since starting her journey into the music industry seven years ago, Tara has been performing to audiences all over the country, capturing them with her catchy and meaningful songs inspired by her own life.

Lewis & Bros are a multi-instrumental three piece folk band from Maidenhead. The band is made up of brothers Sam and Marcus Lewis, and Patrick Ashe. They formed at Furze Platt Senior School. They are regularly found at local open mic nights playing energetic covers and original songs with a range of bizarre instruments.

Lisa Kenny is a solo singer songwriter born and bred in Berkshire. She performs a unique style gaining influences from pop, folk and alternative music. After several years performing at festivals and appearing on BBC Radio, she’s back with some new material and set to record her first official EP this year.

There will also be street food from Maidenhead’s own artisan caterer, Yourz to Eat. The family-run business has two baguette bars in Maidenhead, and you may have also seen their market stall on the High Street. They will be serving delicious hot food and drinks to protect you from the cold outside and get you warmed up ready to dance the night away.  A licensed bar will also be available.

So get the date in your diary and come down to dance along to brass driven funk.
