Lions of Windsor Sculpture Trail

About

Lions of Windsor & Maidenhead 2019 sculpture trail

A giant pride of beautifully decorated, supersized lion sculptures will take pride of place displayed in public locations across the Royal Borough from August to October in an eye-catching public art event to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Queen Victoria and raise funds for local charities.

The magnificent lion sculptures and mini-pride of school lion cubs have been decorated by a team of talented artists, designers and school children from the UK and beyond, in a wide range of styles from fine art to mosaics, street art, illustrations and abstract designs.

Artists include iconic British fashion designer Dame Zandra Rhodes, Christian Lacroix designer Craig Wheatley and the great-great granddaughter of French impressionist Camille Pissarro.  Artists flew into Windsor from Thailand, New York, Paris and Hong Kong to decorate their lions, which will be the pride of the Royal Borough this summer.

Lion Trail maps will be available from outlets across the region from 8th August and will guide visitors on a voyage of discovery around the Royal Borough's historic streets, venues, shopping centres, heritage landmarks, independent shops, museums and local attractions in Windsor, Eton, Ascot, Sunningdale, Old Windsor, Datchet and Maidenhead from 10th August to 28th October.

After three months of entertaining lion fans of all ages, the lion sculptures will be gathered togeher in one giant pride for the 'Lions Roar Goodbye' weekend in Windsor (9-10 November) for lion fans to say their final farewells before the charity auction on 21st November, when all of the large lions and some of the cubs will be sold to raise funds for local charities including Thames Hopsice, The Lions Club of Windsor, Look Good Feel Better and TUSK towards African lion conservation projects.

Megan Witty, Event Director says, "Following the trail maps to track down the pride across the Royal Borough will be a roarsome way of exploring the region and enjoying the beautifully decorated lion sculptures for nearly three months from August to October. The trail will bring fun, colour and art to the streets and will be a fantastic showcase for lion artists, sponsors and venues across the region.  Why not visit for a few days and enjoy a leisurely lion safari across the region as you track down the pride?!"
