Windsor Tourist Guides Plague, Pestilence and Potions Tour: guide and group at The Windsor Guildhall

“The Queen left London for the safety of Windsor Castle”.

No, not The Queen in 2020 during the COVID pandemic but Queen Elizabeth I in 1563 to escape the plague in London.

“One year after the outbreak, Windsor town was wasted, the markets bare and the inhabitants poor”.

Thankfully not Windsor in 2021 but in 1349 after an outbreak of the Black Death that killed 300 stonemasons at Windsor Castle.

“The monarch and the Prime Minister were both struck down during the epidemic”.

No, not The Queen and Boris Johnson but George V and Prime Minister Lloyd George in 1918 during the Spanish Flu pandemic.

During our stroll around Windsor you will see Windsor’s first public treatment venue and vaccination centre; original pharmacy, homes of royal doctors, the site of the Pest House in the 1500s; the last public well and the site of the gallows on the High Street erected by Elizabeth I to ensure lockdown meant lockdown!  We will talk about diseases that regularly hit the inhabitants of the town; smallpox, typhoid, cholera, influenza, plague; how even royalty couldn’t escape outbreaks and the quite dreadful conditions that many Windsorians lived in until the early 20th century.

Tour starts at The Windsor Guildhall and takes 90 minutes, with a maximum group size of six.

Windsor Tourist Guides Ltd received the “We're Good to Go” VisitBritain accreditation and tours will be following Covid-19 social distancing rules.
