Royal Free Singers and The Orchestra of London: Vaughan Williams "A Sea Symphony"/Strauss "Four Last Songs"

Royal Free Singers with the Orchestra of London
Conductor: Benedict Gunner
Soprano: Susan Piggott
Baritone: Andrew Davies

In the stunning, historic surroundings of Eton College School Hall, the Royal Free Singers are delighted to be performing two works in this concert which represent the beginning of one twentieth century composer's career and the final work of another.
Strauss's Four Last Songs are, says Classic FM's Jane Jones, simply one of the most touchingly beautiful ways for a composer to end his career; a swansong of such sublime beauty that takes your breath away.
A Sea Symphony, Vaughan Williams' first major work, is remarkable, being the first choral symphony in which the choir is as integral to the whole work as is the orchestra. In earlier choral symphonies, such as those by Beethoven, Mendelssohn or Mahler, the chorus appears to in just one or two movements. The text for A Sea Symphony is taken from the poetry collection Leaves of Grass by the American poet Walt Whitman, whose work Vaughan Williams discovered and grew to love, while a student in Cambridge.

Tickets: £15.00 in advance, £18.00 on the door, 12-16 yrs £5, child £1

Please note: there is no parking at the College. There is public car parking elsewhere in Eton and Windsor.
