The Fir Tree

About

The Moomins © live on stage in Maidenhead

Norden Farm Centre for the Arts is excited to announce that this year’s Christmas family show will be an adaptation of one of the much-loved Moomin tales. The Fir Tree by Tove Jansson, from Tales in Moominvalley, will run from Tuesday 20 November until Sunday 30 December. Tickets are £13.50 (£11.50 under 16s), Friends and Family (4 people) £46. Suitable for all audiences aged 3 years and upwards.

The Moomin family was hibernating in the drawing room as they were wont to do. They had been sleeping for a few months already and were going to keep it up until spring… Now all at once a cold draught disturbed Moomintroll’s dreams. And someone was pulling at his quilt and shouting that he was tired and Christmas was coming.

The Fir Tree is an adventure set in the idyllic and peaceful Moominvalley. The show features live puppetry and music. It is a gloriously unselfish take on Christmas.

The story was first published in 1962 in a collection of short stories called Tales of Moominvalley by Finnish author and illustrator Tove Jansson. It was re-published last year alongside another tale called The Invisible Child in a unique collaboration between the Moomins, Oxfam, Waterstones and Sort Of Books.

Norden Farm has been working in partnership with The Ding Foundation and Moomin Characters to bring the beautiful story to stage this winter. The Ding Foundation has been creating high quality, original theatre using a range of art forms, including puppetry, music and physical theatre, since 2001. They tell stories which are accessible to diverse audiences.

The tale has been adapted for the stage by writer, performer and storyteller Bernadette Russell. Bernadette is a champion of kindness and, in 2011, she embarked on a personal mission to do something kind for a stranger every day. This project became 366 Days of Kindness, which saw Bernadette share her experiences with audiences through exhibitions, shows and talks, including at Norden Farm.

As well as creating theatre which has toured nationally and internationally, Bernadette has written a number of books for children and adults including Be The Change Make It Happen: Big and small ways kids can make a difference, The Little Book of Wonder and The Little Book of Kindness.

The Fir Tree is directed by former Artistic Director of Little Angel Theatre and Co-Artistic Director of Indefinite Articles, Steve Tiplady. Steve has devised and performed in all of Indefinite Articles productions, including Pinocchio at Norden Farm. His puppet directing credits include work for The Royal Opera House, Royal Shakespeare Company and Shakespeare’s Globe.

Norden Farm is excited to present this charming show for children and grown-ups alike, over the festive season. With free on site parking, free WiFi and a family friendly café bar, it’s the perfect place for a Christmas treat.
