The Muddy Choir

About

Shedding a light on the human lives of the First World War

The Muddy Choir transports audiences into the trenches of Ypres. Three teenage soldiers have been thrust into a landscape vastly different to their Sunderland homes. The Muddy Choir is at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts on Wednesday 3 October at 7.30pm. Tickets are £15 (£13 conc). Recommended for ages 13+ years.

It is November 1917 and the Third Battle of Ypres is lurching towards its bloody conclusion. Three young soldiers are united by their childhood oath ‘nee killing, anly singing, and we all go home together’. Robbie dreams their music will be a ticket away from the front, but attracting the attention of their commanding officers may prove more dangerous than bullets and gas.

The Muddy Choir tells the story of three soldiers serving with the Durham Light Infantry. Will, Robbie and Jumbo learn to navigate the desperation of the trenches with humour and song. The friends hatch a plan to form a choir and use their talents to find a way home from the front.

The play contains close-harmony versions of popular North-East folk songs of the period and traditional wartime songs. It is about childhood friends growing up in unbearable circumstances and the humanising power of music.

It was nominated for Best Play for Young Audiences at the Writers Guild of Great Britain Awards 2015.

The Muddy Choir is produced by the longest established touring company in the UK. Theatre Centre empowers young leadership and youth activism through powerful productions and learning opportunities. Their work places the concerns, dreams and realities of young people at its heart. The company has over sixty years’ experience of creating theatre that cuts straight to the heart of social issues. With The Muddy Choir, they hope to cultivate advocacy and galvanise action from young audiences, moving them towards compassion, conversation and campaigns for peace.

Join us to mark the centenary of the Armistice with a play that sheds light on the human lives caught up in the First World War.
