Indoor-outdoor Hydrotherapy Pool at Fredrick's Hotel

All the accommodation featured has been quality assessed by either VisitBritain or the AA, or has recently applied for a rating and is awaiting assessment.  Please be aware that ratings may change throughout the year.  We also work closely with accommodation belonging to internationally-recognised hotel brand chains where standards and quality are guaranteed.

All hotels and guest accommodation (including B&Bs) are assessed to a set of specific criteria and awarded one to five stars.  The star ratings reflect the overall quality of the experience.

When chosing your accommodation look for the Quality Rose, the official marque of the Enjoy England national tourist board rating scheme. What the ratings mean:

Hotels

Hotels have to be licensed, offer dinner at least five nights a week (unless categorised as a city/town centre Metro Hotel where dinner is not offered) and all rooms en suite or with private bathrooms.

Guest Accommodation

Guest accommodation encompasses anything from one-bedroom B&Bs to larger guest houses or resturants/inns with rooms.

Self-Catering

For self-catering accommodation, the layout and design of the accommodation and the range and quality of the kitcken equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort of the bedrooms and bathrooms and, most importantly, the cleanliness.

Serviced Apartments

Serviced apartments offer hotel services such as maid service, concierge, formal process for handling bookings, arrivals and departures in addition to a self-contained unit with a kitchen.  They tend not to be exclusively urban, with accommodation rated to a similar standard as the Self-Catering scheme.

Campus Accommodation

The campus scheme covers the universities and colleges that are able to accommodate visitors during the vacation periods on a B&B basis.  Generally the rooms are en suite and there will be plenty of single rooms so large groups will not present a problem.  Accommodation is star rated one to five reflecting the quality of the accommodation.

Hostel Accommodation

Hostels provide safe, budget-priced accommodation for young people, families and larger groups and are star rated.  Higher rated accommodation often provides en suite rooms.

Caravan, Touring and Camping Parks

Star ratings reflect the overall quality of the park from one to five stars  five stars being reserved for parks of exceptional quality.

Rosette Ratings for Restaurants

Rosettes (from one to five) are awarded annually to AA-inspected restaurants for the quality of their food.  Most star-rated hotels have their own restaurants and the AA also inspect these.  Not all restaurants receive an AA award, but will generally serve enjoyable food of a reasonable standard.

The ratings made easy:

1 Star Simple, practical, no frills
2 Star Well presented and well run
3 Star Good level of quality and comfort
4 Star Excellent standard throughout
5 Star Exceptional with a degree of luxury
