Top Tips for June

Welcome to June in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead.

Here are our Top Tips for June

Frogmore House and Gardens

In June, visitors to Windsor have a chance to visit Frogmore House and Gardens, situated in the private grounds of Windsor Castle and open to the public for just three days (6-8 June 2017).

The house dates from the 1680s and was a favourite retreat for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.

These three open days are for charity so every visit supports a good cause too.

Gardens to visit

Inspired by Chelsea Flower Show?  Come and visit the beautiful gardens in the Windsor area.

From The Savill Garden, nestled in the corner of Windsor Great Park, to Waltham Place, considered Berkshire’s best-kept secret.

This month, Eton College Gardens are open for one day only (10 June) in aid of the National Garden Scheme.

Art Appreciation

Get yourself down to Maidenhead High Street on 17 June for open air art fair Art on the Street.

Art on the Street sees over 100 artists selling fine art, prints and photography against a backdrop of fantastic entertainment – music, performances, free workshops and activities.

Head down to Cliveden and discover some striking sculptures dotted around the estate.

Internationally acclaimed conceptual artist Bernar Venet has brought a new perspective to the gardens with an exciting outdoor art exhibition.

There are 10 large-scale sculptures around the estate, some scaling up to 9 metres high, each challenging you to re-think the space which has often been home to new and striking art.

Fathers’ Day

It's Fathers' Day on Sunday 18 June.  How will you celebrate?

Check out our Food and Drink page for meal-time inspiration.

How about celebrating with a slap-up family breakfast at one of our great cafes?

French Brothers Boats are offering a relaxing 3-hour Sunday Lunch Cruise on the Thames and the Runnymede on Thames is serving hearty home-cooked lunch in the Lock Bar and Kitchen.

Or treat dad to a Gentleman’s Afternoon Tea full of savoury delights and beer at Oakley Court!

If you are planning a weekend away, you will find all sorts of great accommodation ideas on our Accommodation pages.

Dads who love real ale will appreciate membership of Windsor and Eton Brewery.  Join one of their microbrewery tours: a fun, informative and tasty insight into one of Britain’s oldest and most thriving traditions.

Cheer on the Royal Windsor triathletes

2017 sees the 27th Royal Windsor Triathlon take place on Sunday 18 June.

The Nuffield Health Royal Windsor Triathlon is regarded as one of the best Olympic distance triathlons in the UK and is set against the stunning backdrop of Windsor.

Come and cheer on the participants as they swim in the River Thames, then cycle and run their way to the finish line.

Royal Ascot

It’s June and the world-famous race meeting Royal Ascot is taking place at Ascot Racecourse.

The Queen attends every day of the meeting which runs from Tuesday 20 June to Saturday 24 June.

The royal party make their way to Ascot Racecourse from Windsor Castle via the Long Walk in cars around 1pm, with their horses and carriages leaving the Castle’s Mews an hour or so earlier along the same route.  So the Long Walk is the perfect place to spot the royal family and their guests.

Theatre Royal Repertory Festival, 20 June to 8 July 2017

Enjoy a season of wonderful plays and a company of the bravest – and brightest – stars of tomorrow as Theatre Royal’s Windsor Repertory Festival comes to town!

Over 3 weeks, a team of professional actors and creatives will prepare a repertoire of plays which are rehearsed during the day ready to open the following week, while that week’s play is performed each evening.

It’s an intense way of working and an incredible challenge for the company – and part of the reason we have a generation of actors in the UK with such a wide range of skills.

It’s also a joy for audiences – you have the opportunity to enjoy top-quality theatre made locally and get to know a company of actors over many different plays.

Windsor Championship Dog Show

Did you know Windsor has its own dog show, 29 June to 2 July 2017?  Enjoy this annual show – often described as 'Summer Crufts' – located under the ramparts of Windsor Castle, on the banks of the River Thames.

Over four days, check out the various classes including terriers, gundogs and hounds.  Which canine will win the coveted 'Best in Show' and will you agree with the judge's decision?

Whilst pet dogs are not allowed in the showground, there is a 'dog hospitality tent' where your dog will be looked after for a small charge.

And if you are looking to visit with your four-legged friend, here’s our guide to dog-friendly Windsor.

Enjoy the River Thames

One of the most beautiful stretches of Old Father Thames runs through the Royal Borough, between Hurley and Runnymede.

The summer months offer so many opportunities for enjoying the river.

Feed the swans on Windsor Promenade.  Hire a boat for the day and catch up with friends.  Paddle yourself along on a kayak tour. Walk or cycle the Thames Path.  Enjoy a picnic by the water’s edge.  Sit back and listen to the commentary on a passenger boat.  Relax and enjoy good food on a restaurant cruise.

Visit our Thames Trail page for more inspiration on how to enjoy the stretch of the river in our patch.
