Cliveden House

About

Cliveden is unique. One of the world's finest luxury hotels, this grand stately home is set in the heart of the Berkshire countryside, surrounded by 376 acres of magnificent formal gardens and parkland. The chalk cliffs that give the estate its name provide visitors panoramic views over the beautiful Berkshire countryside and an idyllic bend in the River Thames. It is arguably the finest of luxury hotels near London and Heathrow Airport. From the moment you are ushered into the beautiful Great Hall with its grand fireplace, oak panelling and priceless artworks, our aim is to ensure you feel like a treasured, personal guest. You'll be treated to the very highest standards of quality, with excellence in every detail. Where else can you be surrounded by such extraordinary extravagance and remarkable refinement, but at the same time feel so welcomed and at ease?

Indulge in delicious treats this summer at Cliveden House

Cliveden House is now officially open for lunch, afternoon tea and al fresco picnics, for both residents and non-residents alike.

Executive Head Chef, Christopher Hannon, along with his talented brigade of chefs, have created culinary experiences to match the occasion, from chilled-out Champagne picnics in the grounds of this remarkable estate, delicious laid-back lunches in the relaxed setting of the Astor Grill, and afternoon tea in the elegant surroundings of Cliveden Dining Room, with its stunning views over the Parterre and glimpses of the River Thames beyond. For those who would like to venture out on the water this summer, private river cruises can also be arranged, complete with a Cliveden picnic hamper.

Accommodation at Cliveden House

An invitation to stay at Cliveden was seldom refused in Lady Astor's day - not least because the bedrooms were so luxuriously appointed and the staff so attentive. The standards she set over 100 years ago are still rigorously maintained today. You can be certain of a beautifully restored room filled with exquisite furnishings and priceless antiques. Luxury accommodation in or near London does not come any better than this. Each room is named after a prominent guest or figure from Cliveden's past and furnished accordingly. It's an experience so unforgettable that our many guests, who return time and again, comment on the friendliness and professionalism of our staff.

Spring Cottage

Spring Cottage started life as the Countess of Orkney’s summerhouse in 1813. This three-bedroom traditional cottage is located amid the wooded grounds of Cliveden, on the banks of the River Thames. Well suited for any occasion from a romantic getaway to a family holiday, Spring Cottage features 2 spacious King bedrooms, one has its own bathroom, while the other shares a bathroom with the third bedroom, typically set with Twin Beds. The living room has an open fireplace. The cottage features a fully equipped kitchen, and with the option of hiring in a private chef. Since it is located on the Estate and managed by the hotel, guests can avail of the world-famous gardens, spa, pool, and other exceptional facilities available at Cliveden House.

Fine dining at Cliveden House

Cliveden has a long tradition of fine food and warm hospitality. George Bernard Shaw enjoyed many a fine meal here as a guest of Lord and Lady Astor and would be equally enamoured by the first class cuisine offered at Cliveden today in The Cliveden Dining Room. At Cliveden the cuisine, the wine, the service and the ambience all amaze in equal measure. No matter which restaurant you choose you will find courteous and attentive service, excellent food and palate-tingling wines, delivered in the most beautiful surroundings.

Or visit the Astor Grill, located in the charming old stable block, which once housed Lord Astor’s most prized fillies. Adopting an equestrian theme in its décor, The Astor Grill is full of character offering a simple and informal approach to dining at Cliveden. The all-day menu is overseen by Executive Head Chef Christopher Hannon and it focusses on a mixture of classic American and British dishes, many reminiscent of Cliveden’s diverse owners and residents.

The Cliveden Spa

Hidden in the beautiful garden setting, guests experience a tranquil oasis offering a real sense of wellbeing and relaxation.

Combining quintessentially British treatments and unique residencies such as OTO, and OSKIA whose treatments are designed to complement and accentuate their multiaward-winning nutritional skincare range, the Cliveden Spa creates a rejuvenating environment of unparalleled luxury in a setting that is rich in heritage. The holistic nature of the spa extends beyond treatments to the retail products and the Spa Kitchen, all of which meet the same exceptional standards of service, hospitality and attention to detail.

The centrepiece of the spa is the ‘listed’ outdoor swimming pool, beside which the now infamous Christine Keeler first met John Profumo. However, the spa itself is the epitome of modern luxury, from the cutting edge gym, complete with the latest Technogym equipment, free weights and stretch area, to the indoor heated pool, infrared sauna, aromatherapy steam room, indoor Jacuzzi, outdoor hot tubs, seven treatment rooms, a manicure, pedicure and hair dressing studio. For the hungry, yet health conscious, The Spa Kitchen with views over the walled garden and the option of ‘al fresco’ dining has an all-day salad and juice menu. Another welcome addition is a cleverly concealed glazed walkway, which brings hotel guests directly into the sanctuary of the spa without having to venture outside, except to dip their top into that famous outdoor pool! On site there is also indoor and outdoor tennis courts. The spa studio offers luxury manicure and pedicure treatments, enhanced with a nod to our noble and unique heritage, by our own signature range of nail polishes with names and colours selected to reflect moments in our history, including ‘1666’, ‘Scandal’ ‘Intrigue’ and ‘Astor'.

Guests have included every British monarch since George I as well as Charlie Chaplin, Winston Churchill, Harold Macmillan, President Roosevelt, George Bernard Shaw, John Profumo and Christine Keeler, and many other well-known names from the past and present. Cliveden is, at heart, a charming country house hotel where you can come away to escape, relax and be indulged at every opportunity.

We look forward to welcoming you to the house.
