Make the most of summer in Windsor with a family day packed full of memorable experiences. From exploring royal history at Windsor Castle to enjoying riverside picnics, outdoor play and relaxing green spaces, Windsor is the perfect destination for families during the warmer months.
No visit is complete without stepping inside Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world.
Summer tips:
To make the most of your visit, it’s best to book tickets in advance so you can skip queues during peak season. Arriving early in the morning helps you enjoy cooler temperatures and a quieter experience. As parts of the castle grounds are outdoors, it’s a good idea to bring water and sun protection.
Take time to explore the magnificent State Apartments and St George’s Chapel, and watch out for the Changing the Guard ceremony on selected days — a great free spectacle for families to enjoy outside.

Summer is all about eating outdoors, and Windsor has plenty of options.
You can pick up picnic supplies and head to Alexandra Gardens, where you’ll find riverside views and open space to relax. Alternatively, Bachelor’s Acre is a great choice for families with younger children thanks to its play area.
If you prefer to eat out, Windsor’s town centre and riverside offer a variety of relaxed restaurants with outdoor seating — ideal for sunny days.

If you’re looking for something more hands-on, self-drive boat hire is available with operators such as The Boat Hire Company and Kris Cruisers. Older children and adventurous families may also enjoy paddle sports and kayaking experiences.
