Award winning play based on iconic jazz star

Inspired by the life of Nina Simone and featuring many of her most iconic songs performed live. Black Is The Color Of My Voice is at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts on Saturday 8 March at 8pm. Tickets are £24. Age guidance 12+ years.

Apphia Campbell’s acclaimed play follows a successful singer and civil rights activist as she seeks redemption after the untimely death of her father. She reflects on the journey that took her from a young piano prodigy destined for a life in the service of the church, to a renowned jazz vocalist at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement.

Performed by Florence Odumosu. The play is winner of the Best Theatre Award at Adelaide Fringe 2024. It has toured the UK to standing ovations and played sell-out seasons in Shanghai, New York, Edinburgh and London’s West End.

Apphia Campbell is an award-winning playwright, actress, producer and singer. Originally from the United States she is celebrated for her politically charged work that explores the African- American experience. In addition to her theatre work, Apphia has appeared in BBC productions such as The Novels That Shaped the World and Urban Myths. She was commissioned by the BBC to write the children’s story Zachary the Zebroid. She also created Birdie’s Dilemma for BBC Scotland and the National Theatre of Scotland as part of their Scenes for Survival series.

Apphia’s contributions extend beyond the stage. She has been elected to the boards of the Edinburgh Fringe Society and the National Galleries.
