Conveniently located in the centre of Royal Windsor, Giggling Squid serves innovative and tasty Thai food. Guests will be treated to a lunchtime Thai tapas menu and an extensive evening menu, both of which feature a varied selection of seafood, meat, curry, noodles and stir fry options.
Designed by founder Pranee Laurillard, the beautiful three-tiered space combines hand-painted framed stencils with bold, floral wallpaper and panelling, which add a splash of defining colour. Stunning light fixtures, plush seating and soft leather banquettes create a stylish yet welcoming setting.
Brand new tapas dishes at lunch include Delicious Thai Chicken Wings, packed full of flavour these chicken wings are a perfect small plate treat. Other new tapas dishes include Samui Zingy Prawns and Som Tam Papaya Salad, fresh sweet papaya with a vibrant dressing of fresh chilli, cherry tomatoes, dried shrimp, Thai garlic and fish sauce. A must-try ‘Big Dish’ is the Home Comfort Beef & Aubergine, a simple yet satisfying minced beef stir fry.
On the evening menu, new starters include founder Pranee Laurillard’s favourite, Big Flavour Mushroom Larb, a speciality from Isan Province, juicy, exotic mushrooms tossed in a power-punch of fresh mint, dried chilli flakes, ground toasted rice and shallots. Other must-tries include Crunchy Duck & Lychee Bites, crispy discs of toasted rice topped with succulent duck, star fruit and sweet lychee alongside the Betel Leaf & Ginger Lime Salmon Morsels of salmon pieces nestled in lemongrass, lime cubes (skin on!), ginger and roasted shredded coconut wrapped in Betel leaf.
The mains are split into ‘From the Water’, ‘From the Land’ and a selection of delicious stir fries, curries and noodles. Highlights include Chubby Cheek Pork, soaked in ginger, black pepper and palm sugar then slow-cooked and served with vegetable relish; Pad Cha, a popular Thai seafood stir fry with a fiery flavour combination of pounded chilli, garlic and thinly sliced krachai and fresh peppercorns thrown in a flaming wok. The Golden Bamboo & Chicken Bowl is bound to be a big hit with tender chicken with crunchy bamboo shoots, coconut tips, fresh green peppercorns and fresh turmeric gives this dish a vibrant yellow colour.
The Little Tapas for Little Hands menu also has some exciting additions for adventurous palates. Kids can choose two small plates for £5.99 with options including Pork Dumplings; Spring Rolls; a little bowl of Mild Chicken Massaman Curry and Chicken Fried Rice. Puddings include Roti with condensed milk and a sprinkling of sugar and Fruity Ice Lollies for an additional £1.99.
Owned by Thai-born Pranee Laurillard and her husband Andy, Giggling Squid – the nickname of one of their three children – was founded in the basement of a tiny fisherman’s cottage, now the Brighton restaurant, where dreams of replicating a taste of home became a reality. The couple opened their first site in Hove in 2009 and have gone on to establish a strong reputation for authentic Thai cooking with an emphasis on signature curries and coastal specialities.
