Laithwaites Wine & Windsor

Tony Laithwaite arrived in Windsor as a schoolboy after moving from Bolton with his family.  Having fallen in love with Bordeaux and its wines while spending summers free from University studies washing bottles at a small wine co-operative in Saint-Émilion, he started bringing bottles back for friends and family to enjoy. From these first steps into the world of Wine he founded Bordeaux Direct as a wine import business with its first proper home in Arch 36, under the Windsor & Eton Central station.

Laithwaites Wine, proudly independent and still family owned for over 50 years, has grown from these humble beginnings to be at the forefront of finding and delivering unique, interesting, quality wines direct to your home.  Always with the aim of supporting independent wine makers to grow their business along with their vines, many, like us, family owned passing their wine making skills on from generation to generation. 

Now a worldwide business we haven’t forgotten our roots and have gone back to the vineyard, planting and cultivating vines on the Windsor Great Park to make award-winning English Sparkling Wine at Henry Laithwaite, Tony’s eldest son's winery, Harrow & Hope just up the road in Marlow. Windsor Great Park Vineyard English Quality Sparkling Wine

Windsor Great Park Vineyard is a superb site for producing English Quality Sparkling Wine at the heart of this Royal Park.  Its discovery is a long (and charming) story that resulted in the planting of this 3-hectare plot in 2011, with the permission of the Duke of Edinburgh, the official Ranger for the Park.  Ideal soils, exposure to the sun, with slopes leading down to Great Meadow Pond … all near-perfect conditions, bar perhaps the grape-thirsty parakeets that perch in nearby oak trees.  We had the best in the business advising us and the outcome has been an award-winning fizz that has received critical acclaim from the press worldwide.

Since its first release – the 2013 vintage in 2016 – Windsor Great Park Vineyard fizz has won many awards, including 94 points from Decanter and the International Wine Challenge competition, 93 points from the ’50 Great Sparkling Wines of the World’, a Mundus Vini Gold medal and many more.  

The vineyard is tended with great care by Henry Laithwaite, who is also the talented winemaker.  All the grapes are taken to his prize-winning Harrow & Hope winery in Marlow, close by.  A blend of mostly Chardonnay supported by Pinot Noir and Meunier, made by the traditional method with the secondary fermentation in bottle and long ageing on its lees, this quality sparkling wine gets better every vintage.
