A Night of Jazz at the Farm
Will Gibson is a younger Lion of the London jazz scene. The Will Gibson Quartet is at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts on Friday 21 June at 8pm. Tickets are £16.
His playing is influenced by the power tenor sax players Mike Brecker, Joe Hendeson, John Coltrane – however there’s as much a softer side to his tone too.
An effortless musical talent and impeccable taste. The music performed is a selection of pieces and themes from the 70s and 80s plus 90s when jazz dipped its toes in more rocky waters. This is very uplifting heartfelt and emotive music.
Will Gibson is a British saxophonist and woodwindist based in London. A graduate of Trinity College of Music, he performs and tours across the UK and Europe in a variety of ensembles and styles including jazz, pop and classical. He also plays for recording sessions and has held chairs on several London West End shows. In 2016, his debut album Facets was released on Pathway Records.
Joining Will is Alex Hutton on piano. Alex is an established pianist on the London Jazz scene. Over the past 10 years, he has worked with most of the leading figures (such as Jim Mullen, Pete King and more). He began playing piano at the age of 5. After completing a BA Hons degree in American studies, he turned his focus fully to jazz piano. He won the appraisal of the late Ronnie Scott.
Darren McCarthy is on bass. Darren earned his degree at the Leeds College of Music and Masters Degree at The Guildhall School Of Music and Drama. He has established himself on the London jazz scene as a much sought-after bassist working with notable musicians inside and outside of the jazz world. He has performed with Irish cult folk rock band Interference and has also performed at numerous international music festivals.
Andy Ball is on drums. He is a jazz drummer foremost and has a masters degree in jazz drums from the prestigious Royal Academy of Music. Andy teaches and plays drums professionally and has performed at venues from the glitz of the Royal Albert Hall to the world famous Du Dec Lombards jazz club in Paris.
What to listen for – Will Gibson’s tone is enchanting, perfectly in tune and tasteful. Also listen to how the drummer frames the musical ideas, with a call and response effect.
