UK tribute to US master of rhythm and blues

Performed by five piece band JJ’s Escondidos. The JJ Cale Story is at Norden Farm Centre for the Arts on Saturday 10 August at 8pm. Tickets are £16.

The band play JJ Cale’s classic hits Magnolia, After Midnight, Cocaine and many more. The songs established his reputation as the master of laid back rhythm and blues. They also feature songs from his collaboration with Eric Clapton, Road to Escondido.

John Weldon ‘JJ Cale’ was an American guitarist, singer and songwriter. Though he avoided the limelight, his influence as a musical artist has been acknowledged by figures such as Neil Young and Mark Knopfler. Eric Clapton described him as one of the most important artists in rock history. He is one of the originators of the Tulsa sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country and jazz.

In 1966, JJ Cale cut a demo single with Liberty Records of his songs After Midnight with Slow Motion as the B side. Later Eric Clapton recorded the song After Midnight on his debut album and it became a top 20 hit. In 1974, Lynyrd Skynrd recorded his song Call Me The Breeze. In 1976, JJ Cale’s album Troubadour included the song Cocaine which became a major hit for Eric Clapton the following year.

In 2004, JJ Cale and Eric Clapton recorded the album The Road to Escondido together, named after a city in San Diego.

Having recently played to sell out shows at the Watford Fringe festival and the Henderson Hub, JJ’s Escondidos are thrilled to be making their debut at Norden Farm.
