This half-term we are celebrating all things equine (horsey!). Our family crafts and activities will revolve around this theme as 2026 is the Chinese Year of The Horse.
You might not realise but there is a Royal Mews at Windsor Castle where the horses are stabled when the Royal Family go riding at Windsor. It also houses many of the carriages used for state occasions or for Royal Ascot. Horses can also be found throughout the Royal Collection within the Castle and you can find horses in paintings and statues in many of the grand rooms of Windsor Castle's State Apartments.
We are delighted to be again working alongside the local Busy Buttons CORE charity, who designed and created The Dream Horse, a sustainability initiative commissioned by Ascot Racecourse in collaboration with four SEN schools (Heathermount, Manor Green, Arbour Vale & Forest Bridge).
More than 60 young people helped to craft the beautiful structure which was made using recycled materials from the racecourse. It was on display during Royal Ascot and throughout the summer of 2025 at Ascot, showcasing sustainability, creativity and community to thousands of racegoers.
The installation will be on show throughout half-term within the Learning Centre at the Castle. In addition, Busy Buttons' young Duke of Edinburgh candidates, will be supporting the activities on the first weekend of half-term.
So come along and get all 'equestrian' with your creativity!
You can also pick up a children's trail at the Learning Centre to enjoy as you explore the Castle.
