About

Windsor & Royal Borough Museum is temporarily closed to improve the visitor experience to the Grade I listed Windsor Guildhall. New objects will be displayed in the gallery, and the buildings royal and local significance will be shared with more residents and visitors.

The works are part of an ongoing project to update the Museum and are funded by a recent £65K grant awarded by Arts Council England. The museum is expected to reopen in Spring 2026.

In the meantime, you can still explore your local heritage and support the work of the museum.

Online resources

You can view the museum collection online here and on their YouTube channel. You can also listen to their podcasts here.

Windsor Parish Church Exhibition

You can visit their exhibition at the Windsor Parish Church - St John the Baptist, just a short walk down the High Street from Windsor Guildhall. The exhibition was installed to mark 200 years since the church was rebuilt. The Church is also home to the famous painting by Francis de Cleyn of the Last Supper.

Sponsor an object

You can continue to support the museum whilst they remain closed by sponsoring an object. They have curated a list of over 40 unique objects from their collection which can be sponsored for a year. Choose from three levels of annual sponsorship (£25, £50 and £100) with benefits ranging from:

  • a digital certificate
  • name on our donor board
  • an invite to our annual gala
  • a private tour of Windsor Guildhall.

Which gem will you pick? Click here to learn more.

Volunteer

When the museum reopens, they will have a variety of volunteer roles available. Help them to care for their collection, welcome visitors, deliver guided tours, and support the smooth running of the museum. More information is available here.

Friends of the Museum – community lottery

Windsor & Maidenhead Community Lottery is a weekly lottery that raises money for good causes in the Royal Borough. All good causes supported by the lottery benefit the Royal Borough and its residents. You can choose to buy a ticket and support the Friends of Windsor & Royal Borough Museum. Learn more here.

Windsor and Royal Borough Museum is a family-friendly museum bursting with interesting facts and interactive displays of East Berkshire.

The museum explores the history of the borough through an audio trail of stories told by local residents about their lives and the changing landscape of Windsor.

The museum offers a look into our unique and varied collection, from our 100,000-year-old Mammoth tusk to a model of a Hawker Hurricane, the plane designed by Windsor-born Sir Sydney Camm.

When available, we also offer guided tours of the Grade I listed Windsor Guildhall, where you can gain a glimpse into these splendid rooms, view the collection of portraits of monarchs since Elizabeth I and learn about the civic history of Windsor.

Visitors can also help the museum to record the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our community by donating items to ‘The Royal Borough Memory Box’. This historic project invites you to contribute your photographs, videos, artwork, stories and any items that represent your personal experiences of life during the pandemic and in lockdown.

To get involved with this unique opportunity, visit the Royal Borough Memory Box website here.

Follow the museum on Twitter, Facebook or Instagram and subscribe to their YouTube channel for newly released content.

Nice place to see exhibits just a shame there is not more. As it is free then worth it but not worth more than 100 characters. Read full review
