Join Janet Gough OBE for the 25th Maurice and Shelagh Bond Memorial Lecture "The Jewel in the Crown: 550 years of St George’s Chapel and its Gothic inspiration".
This lecture explores the multifaceted influences on St George’s Chapel, Windsor, as it celebrates 550 years of architectural and ceremonial prominence. The talk will consider the chapel’s various functions: a royal chapel, the spiritual home for the Order of the Garter - Britain’s most senior order of chivalry, a place of worship and burial with chantry chapels endowed for perpetual commemoration, and a pilgrimage destination.
The heart of the lecture will focus on the Perpendicular Gothic style, the last and most distinctly English phase of medieval architecture. With its soaring vertical lines, magnificent fan vaults, spacious interiors, and vast window tracery, St George’s is an outstanding late expression of “the Perpendicular”. The discussion will reference St George’s Chapel to other Gothic masterpieces such as St Stephen’s Chapel, Westminster, Gloucester Cathedral choir and King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, and consider how these and other significant church buildings pushed technical and aesthetic boundaries, before the onset of the Renaissance and Reformation.
We will look at what makes St George’s Chapel special and unique: including its finely unified Perpendicular design, stained glass, iron and woodwork. And finally its remarkable survival - the combination of architectural innovation, royal function, ongoing ceremonial life and spiritual intimacy makes St George’s not just an historic building but a vibrant part of Britain’s continuing story.
