With the Easter school holidays upon us, planning a day trip to Windsor and the Royal Borough – or even an ‘eggs’-tended short break! – is a perfect idea. 

There’s loads to do, both in our pretty towns and villages and out in the countryside too, PLUS you have the gorgeous River Thames running right through the borough offering lots of opportunities for riverside walks, boat trips and tours as well as feeding the swans on the promenade.

1. Easter activities at Windsor Castle

If you are visiting Windsor Castle this Easter, join in with their fun-filled Easter activities.  This year they will be celebrating the 250th anniversary of the birth of the artist JMW Turner, one of the most widely admired and influential British artists of all time.  Drop by the Castle's Learning Centre during the Easter school holidays, and get creative with some Turner-inspired arts and crafts. Make a memento to take home and enjoy a free trail as you further explore the Castle.

2. Watch some live entertainment and enjoy some 'have a go' sessions

This Easter there are some great live shows for all the family at Windsor's Theatre Royal including Fireman Sam Live, Science Museum Live and The Dinosaur that Pooped a Rock Show.

At Norden Farm Centre for the Arts in Maidenhead, the Easter holidays means it's time for Quest Family Fest, a fun-packed fortnight of new experiences for children and families including activities, shows and films!  Family shows include The Farmer and The Clown, Olaf Falafel’s Stupidest Super Stupid Show So Far, The Amazing Bubble Man, The Museum of Marvellous Things and Shadow Necropolis.  There’s also Art Daze activity club, Relaxed family film screenings and craft sessions.

On Friday 18 April, children of all ages and their families can try something new with Explore – a whole day of one-hour workshops. Workshops are £4.50 per person or buy a Pass – four workshops for £16 per person. With over 40 workshops to choose from including Circus Skills, Special Effects Makeup, Street Dance, Screen Printing and Chocolate Making.

3. Plan your escape in one of our escape rooms!

Escape rooms are all the rage and perfect for older children.  Work in small groups of friends or family, against the clock, to solve puzzles and riddles using all the clues in order to 'escape'.  You'll find two great escape room experiences in Windsor: Escape in 60 Windsor and Windsor Escape Experience.  How will you fare?  There's only one way to find out!

4. Take to the River Thames

There’s really nothing like experiencing the area from the serenity of the river.  Hire a rowing or motor boat from Windsor Promenade, join a passenger boat or duck tour or indulge in a skippered private rivercraft!  The choice is yours.  French Brothers Boats run 40-minute and 2-hour trips from Windsor Promenade and also have scheduled trips from historic Runnymede too, including one on board the replica Victorian paddle steamer 'Lucy Fisher'.

7. Our Windsor and Eton museums offer free entry!

Pop by Windsor’s historic Guildhall and you’ll discover the fascinating Windsor & Royal Borough Museum (open Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Cross over the River Thames and discover Eton’s museums and galleries: the Museum of Antiquities and the Natural History Museum (open Sundays only) and the Museum of Eton Life (open Saturdays and Sundays).

8. Fly a spitfire at Maidenhead Heritage Centre!

With the replica flight controls and wide screen pilot view, Maidenhead Heritage Centre's Spitfire Simulator Experience has been described as a ‘great activity for all the family’ and ‘the best fun in town’ and simply ‘EPIC!!!‘  The simulator is suitable for ‘pilots’ aged 8 or over.

Fancy flying over London, Paris, New York or Sydney?  You can choose because YOU are the pilot!  Friendly volunteers will provide instruction so that everyone gets the most out of their ‘flight’.  Open the throttle and listen to the roar of the iconic Merlin engine; you will travel back in time and become one of those famous Spitfire pilots of World War II.

9. Enjoy the great outdoors

Wtih Easter falling a little later this year, let's hope that means brighter, drier days with plenty of opportunities for fun in the great outdoors, whether it's walking, cycling or even canoeing and kayaking!  Enjoy the wide open space of Windsor Great Park; feed the swans on the River Thames; discover a fascinating world of walkways, slides, sculptures and treehouses at Adventure Play.

10. Experience Space Safari drone show

Space Safari is an extraordinary drone light show coming to Royal Windsor Racecourse on 19 April. The sky overhead will be transformed into a cinematic storytelling experience!
