The bustling town of Windsor is crowned by Windsor Castle and a visit to the area would not be complete without a trip to the most regal of Windsor attractions. 

In fact it is the largest and oldest inhabited castle in the world, one of the official residences of His Majesty The King and was Queen Elizabeth II’s favourite weekend home.

Check which flag is flying from the Round Tower; if it’s the Royal Standard then The King will be in residence when you visit.

You may be planning to visit on a day when Changing the Guard is taking place – watch the guards and their band march from the barracks to the Castle for the Guard Change ceremony.

Windsor is a very compact town with plenty to see and do within walking distance of the Castle.

We recommend allowing about 3 hours to visit the Castle but that leaves you with plenty of time to see some of the other attractions too.

Are you a lover of historic houses and gardens?

Then don’t forget to include a visit to Cliveden, the Savill Garden or hidden gem Dorney Court too.

The Royal Borough’s museums provide a fascinating insight into the local area.

Learn more about the town by dropping into Windsor and the Royal Borough Museum, situated in Windsor Guildhall where His Majesty The King got married and Sir Elton John’s civil partnership took place. 

Maidenhead Heritage Centre, about 6 miles from Windsor, has been described as a “great little museum” featuring a Roman skeleton and a Spitfire simulator and lots in between!

Eton College is home to three museums open free of charge on Sunday afternoons: The Eton College Natural History Museum is Berkshire’s only dedicated natural history museum and perfect for families. Then there's the Museum of Eton Life and the Museum of Antiquties too!

You can even hire a horse-drawn carriage ride in the town of Windsor or in Windsor Great Park. 

20 miles of the River Thames meanders through the Royal Borough; why not enjoy the relaxed pace of life on the river by boat, kayak or even by duck? 

If you enjoy a flutter on the horses then visit Ascot, one of the most well-known attractions in Windsor & Maidenhead, home to Ascot Racecourse, one of the world’s most famous racecourses where you can enjoy flat racing and jump racing throughout the year. 

Windsor also has its own racecourse on an island in the Thames; Royal Windsor Racecourse is famous for its evening meetings in the summer months and themed days from April to October.

If you love the outdoors, then you will enjoy exploring the open countryside of Windsor Great Park and the miles of footpath and towns and villages along the River Thames Path.

As well as Windsor Castle, another fantastic attraction is Legoland Windsor Resort where families can play their part in a world of Lego® adventure.

With 55 rides and attractions, you will need a full day to fit it all in!
